18U (born in 1992) 18U is the fourth level in Alberta’s elite development system which leads to a Canadian Open National Championship. This category of play also leads to Alberta’s Provincial Team Program for outstanding individual athletes. 18U teams are not eligible to participate in 21U events. In order to be eligible to compete in the Canadian Open Championship, teams must take part in the Provincial Championship for their age category. The libero position and 6 limited substitutions will be used for Premier events and the Provincial Championships.
The season will consist of 5 events; 4 Premier Tournaments, and the Provincial Championships. The top 2 finishers in Division 1 at the Provincial Championships will have their entry fee paid for by Alberta Volleyball into the Canadian Open Championship. The Tachikara International will be the official competition ball for this age category. |
Pandas
18U Gold - Patti Skolski, Jeff Ross
Patti has been teaching with Edmonton Public School for 26 years and is currently the counselor and special needs coordinator at Vimy Ridge Academy. Patti is a veteran coach and has coached on and off with various schools in the Edmonton district over her 26 years of teaching. Patti has previously coached NAVC women’s teams at the U13, U15, U16, and U17 levels, with her U16 team winning a Provincial Championship in 2005. She has also coached with the Park Volleyball club at the U14, U15 and U17 levels, and her U14 team won Provincial silver. Patti has her NCCP Level 2 Certification.
Jeff Ross - Assistant Coach This will be Jeff’s second season coaching with NAVC. Jeff previously played for the Red Deer College Kings. He also played for the Grant MacEwan university Griffins last season. Jeff’s previous coaching experiences include head coach of U16 Men’s CAKVC team and head coach of the Team Saskatchewan Juveniles Women’s team, which won a gold medal at the North American Indigenous Games. Jeff was the assistant coach with the U17 Panda's last club season. He is currently an assistant coach with the kings university college eagles men's program. Jeff has his NCCP level 2 certification. |
Bears
Eirik Thomassen - Associate Coach Eirik joins NAVC after a successful CIS and FIVB career.As a native of Norway, Eirik has played over 60 international matches for his country as both a starting left side and libero.He has played against the likes of China, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Finland, Egypt, Montenegro, Portugal, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, and Ukraine, among many others.He also won the Norwegian Elite League Championship in the 2005-2006 season.While still competing internationally, Eirik played two years for the University of Alberta as a left side from 2006 to 2008.In his last year, he won a CIS National Championship, capping off a wonderful playing career.Eirik has coached Norwegian men’s and women’s youth teams and also has coached many camps and clinics in Norway and Canada.He has his Level 1 Norwegian Coaching certification.Eirik is completing his Bachelor of Commerce degree with a minor in International Business at the University of Alberta.He is excited to take on a new challenge coaching up-and-coming, determined athletes. Brad “Pops” Poplawski - Technical Director/Assistant Coach Brad rejoins NAVC with increased knowledge of the international game and another year of experience as an assistant coach with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.He continues to develop his coaching skills through his work with Terry Danyluk and Dale Johns.Brad is working on his Master’s in Coaching Science degree at the University of Alberta in addition to his coaching, and video analysis with the Golden Bears.In the past he has head-coached NAVC teams to two Provincial golds, one silver, and a 5th place at Nationals.He has won two CIS National Championships as an assistant coach with the Golden Bears.As a player, Brad was a setter in the ACAC for Medicine Hat and Grant MacEwan.He is also an experienced beach player and coach—learning from Misty May and Kerri Walsh’s Brazilian coach in California and playing in numerous provincial beach tournaments and nationals.Brad is a Level 2 Coach and looks forward to working with Tyler and Eirik in developing athletes for the college and university level. |
