NAVC Griffins 17W Coaching Staff

Head Coach - Brian Kim

Brian is no stranger to NAVC. He has been both a player and a coach for many years. Brian has coached teams from: Johnston Heights High School in Surrey, British Columbia, Lillian Osborne High School, Edmonton Christian High School, Edmonton Christian West Junior High and Tyndale College and Seminary in Toronto, Ontario.  Brian has coached the Ross Sheppard High School Senior girls where they brought home the city championship after breaking a 50 year city championship dry spell.  A week later the team brought home Ross Shep’s first provincial 4A volleyball medal.  In the following year, Brian coached with Jace Barros at Edmonton Christian High School and led the Senior Boys to a 4A provincial bronze medal. After the school season, Brian was the assistant coach of FOG Black U18 boys where the team brought home a multiple premier championships, a silver medal at Nationals and a Gold in the Bronze division at the USA Volleyball Boys' Junior National Championships.  Last season Brian coached the NAVC U17 Griffins to a 4th place finish at Provincials ending the season with a Gold in Division 1, Tier 4.

Brian has a Bachelor of Human Kinetics, Masters of Divinity and an After Degree in Education with a Physical Education Major and CTS Minor.  Brian competes in the sport Dragon boating during his summers and has represented his club and country at the Commonwealth Festival in Penang, Malyasia and Club Crew World Championships in Macau, China.  Brian’s certifications are: Certified Level 1 Gymnastics, In-training Level 2 Badminton and In-training Level 3 Volleyball. 

Assistant Coach - Aimee Schubert

With parents who played volleyball at the University of Alberta, Aimee has been immersed in the world of volleyball her entire life. Growing up she played at various clubs throughout the Edmonton area including FOG, Griffins, and NAVC. In High School, after helping the Harry Ainlay Titans to a City and Provincial Championship in 2009 and a City Bronze in 2010, Aimee was recruited as a setter to play NCAA Division One Volleyball at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. After two season with the Raiders, Aimee transferred to Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland where she played an additional three years of NCAA Division One Volleyball.

As one of the Captains of the Towson Tigers, Aimee helped her team to a Second Place Conference finish in 2014 and a Conference Championship in 2015. She also led the team in assists which helped earn her team a Top 5 National Ranking in Team Kills and Team Assists in 2015. Individually, Aimee earned herself a spot on the CAA All-Academic Team in 2014 and again in 2015. She also won the Female Strength and Conditioning Award at Towson University in 2016.

During her time in Maryland, Aimee coached at the Maryland Volleyball Academy and the Towson Volleyball Academy. She has since graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electronic Media and Film in 2016 and has moved back to Edmonton where she is currently the Assistant Coach of the Junior Women’s Volleyball Team at Harry Ainlay. Having been given so many incredible opportunities because of volleyball Aimee hopes to inspire and help up-and-coming athletes achieve their own unforgettable experiences through the sport.

Assistant Coach - Shelby Larsen

Shelby is entering her 8th year with NAVC, bringing a wealth of coaching and playing experience. Shelby began her volleyball career in 7th grade at Victoria School. Her senior year was a highlight, when her team won City Conference finals and she was awarded MVP and Top Female Athlete. In 2009, Shelby began playing middle in the inaugural year of volleyball at Concordia University of Edmonton. In her first year, Shelby was a member of the  ACAL All Conference Team and played in both the ACAL Finals and the Western Canadian Finals. For the next two years Shelby enjoyed playing in the ACAC with her fellow Thunder athletes. After three years at Concordia, Shelby graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and began her after-degree at the University of Alberta. 

Over her many years of coaching, Shelby has been a part of several of teams in Edmonton. She has had the opportunity to coach in a variety of different programs including senior boys at Parkview and T.D. Baker, senior girls at Florence Hallock, and junior girls at M.E. LaZerte. Shelby has enjoyed coaching in a variety of camps including Jasper Volleyball Camp and Concordia Summer Camps, and this summer had the opportunity to coach along side former Team Canada captain Fred Winters at the NAVC Future Stars Camp. 

Most recently, Shelby coached the junior boys team at Shauna May Seneca, where she teaches French and music. During her time with NAVC she has been part of several very successful teams in a variety of age groups. She is especially excited for this U17 season as she coached this group in their U13 year in 2014.
