Melissa Garska A·Head Coach

Bio This season will be Melissa's eighth year coaching club volleyball. Over these eight years, in addition to club, she has coached all school levels. Melissa has been fortunate to watch many of the athletes she has coached to move on and play for team Alberta, U of A, Olds college, Kings University, U of C, Trinity University, Nait, RDC, and the Junior National Team. For five years she was also extremely fortunate to be an assistant coach with Mark Maris and Ryan Flannigan, both very talented coaches and she learned a lot from them. Melissa brings those experiences and uses them to guide her as a head coach. Last year she was fortunate again to have Justin Merta as her assistant coach. They had a very successful season and enjoyed each step of the way. If she had to pick a highlight during her experiences as a coach Melissa would say it was during her visit to the National Training Centre in Gatineau with the Men's National Volleyball team. She had the incredible opportunity to learn from Glenn Hoag and see the bigger picture of volleyball. Melissa's coaching philosophy is based around athlete longevity in the sport. This is broken down between skill development and love of the game. At a young age such as U15 players do not know where they will end up, how tall they will be, or what position they will be best at. Although we do play a set position, she tries to teach a wholistic set of skills and create dynamic players who are not limited in choices later on in life. The second part is making sure athletes chose to continue playing the game. Her hope that through her coaching style and the environment and mentality that is created as a team that athletes are excited to come to practice and tournaments. Melissa truly believes that when you do this, you will be successful both in the goal of development and on the scoreboard. During her coaching career, Meliissa's teams have been very successful as her teams have achieved Provincial gold in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. In the Best of the West Tournaments, her teams have won Gold in 20112 & 2013. They have also been successful on the National stage in achieving Gold in 2010, 2012, 2014, Silver in 2013 and Bronze in 2009. On the International side of things her teams have won a USA Bronze in 2009. We are very excited to have Melissa back again for the 2014/2015 club season.
