Bio Hello prospective NAVC athletes! My name is Mike Smith and I have been with the club for one full season after moving from Toronto, Ontario. I was a member of the Humber Hawks men's volleyball team for 5 seasons from 2002-2006 and 2008. During my five seasons with Humber College we qualified for CCAA Nationals three times and I helped the team win an OCAA Provincial Championship in 2005 ending Humber's 30 year gold medal drought. During the 2007 and 2009 season I was added to the coaching roster in an assisting role and had a blast maintaining the level of excellence that was started during my playing days. Humber has entrenched itself as a perennial contender which came through hard work and dedication from players and coaching staff alike. My coaching philosophy follows that of my mentor and friend Wayne Wilkins. Coach Wilkins taught me life lessons through sport and helped me get through some challenging periods in my life. I was surprised to be recruited as a middle blocker as I am only 6'2 but had relative success in my first two seasons. In my third year I was challenged for my starting position by some very talented (and tall!) rookies. As disappointed as I was I had to realize that a starting spot on the floor was not going to be given to me. I had to earn it. While I had the self-awareness to know that I was not going to play middle blocker, I learned to adapt and make changes in my game that would still allow for me to play full time. I focused on fundamentals and became the starting libero and never looked back! Coach Wilkins showed me that life will find a way to push and challenge you both on and off the court. He expected me to take control of the situation and not to shy away from the challenge. I expect the same from prospective players. If you come to the gym with a positive attitude, the desire to learn and grow as an athlete and the work ethic to make it all happen, then I am the right coach for you! I will work with you and help shape you into a better athlete on the court as well as provide leadership and guidance off the court. I am willing to share my experience to help make yours that much greater. I am open and honest and very easy to get along with. I look forward to meeting you all at tryouts! Feel free to come take a minute or two of my time if you want to learn more about my coaching philosophies!
